Have you heard of these guys?
At Clara Green, we love hearing about other people's sustainability adventures. And we especially like helping businesses that have made the decision to reduce their impact on the environment.
Sustainable Salons is a social enterprise that keeps up to 95% of salon waste out of landfill by collecting and repurposing it. How good is that?
A lot of the waste generated by hairdressers is not covered by the usual commercial recycling programs. Worse, they deal with some really nasty chemicals on a daily basis. Chemicals that you don't want ending up in landfill.
So in 2015 Paul Frasca and Ewelina Soroko decided that this was a problem they could fix. They developed a system salons use to make collecting and sorting their waste straightforward. Participating salons are rewarded with points they redeem on environmentally preferable products and services (which is where we come in). This makes it really easy for salons to make good environmental choices when sourcing products, and good environmental choices when disposing of products.
But wait! There's more...
Sustainable Salons gifts all the proceeds from repurposing salon waste to Ozharvest in Australia and Kiwiharvest in New Zealand. They fund about 2000 meals a month.
Why am I telling you all this?
Because we have just started working with Sustainable Salons, supplying our GECA certified environmentally preferable cleaning products to salons, via the rewards scheme. This makes us really happy. We love making it easier for businesses to make greener decisions. And I love knowing I can spend my haircut money in a salon that isn't afraid to try to make things better for everyone.
